Island Spotlight – Grenada

Grenada is a Caribbean country comprising a main island, also called Grenada, and two smaller islands, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Dubbed the “Spice Isle,” the hilly main island is home to numerous nutmeg plantations. It’s also the site of the capital, St. George’s.  It’s located in the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea and is the southernmost of the Windward Islands.  Independence was granted on 7 February 1974 under the leadership of Eric Gairy, who became the first prime minister of Grenada as a sovereign state.

The island is home to Sandals Grenada which is located in Pink Gin Beach, St George’s, Grenada.  It has 10 restaurants and 6 bars including a swim-up bar.  It also has 5 pools, 2 whirlpools, and Pickleball courts.  The resort is only about 1 mile or 15 minutes from the Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND).  An interesting fact is that Pink Gin Beach is a unique, natural mix of golden and volcanic black sand, often appearing as a warm beige or light gray rather than bright white. Because Grenada is a volcanic island, the sand is naturally dark, but the beach at the resort is soft and known for its crystal-clear waters.
